Another weekend has come and gone and as I stare another jam packed week in the face, knowing full well that I won’t be able to come up for air until next Sunday, I can’t help but wonder…Where’s my head at?
February is literally vanishing before my very eyes as I look at the list of to-do’s that will carry me well into April with little to no mercy. In the few moments I have to consider how I’m spending my time every day, I can’t help but wonder if I’m actually making any progress toward the things I set out to do one month ago when I gave up a 40k+ salary with full benefits for longer than 8 hour days of work with nothing to show for it but “gaining experience”. Some of my “tweeps” may even wonder if I’m still alive….
The two biggest things that I have NOT put more time into this year are blogging and running. I’ve put these temporarily on the back burner for two other things that I need to put a lot of time and effort into upfront.
1) Becoming a CrossFit coach – as I’ve mentioned before. This is going pretty well and this next week I am actually on the schedule to coach and not just shadow or assist.
2) Coaching an endurance team – which I’ve not mentioned
before. More on that in a second.
This is where my head is at right now. These two things sound awfully simple but they’re not, nor should they be. I’ve always felt that nothing worth doing is “easy”.
I’m not going to lie. The idea of coaching an endurance program is a bit intimidating. However, I won’t be doing it alone and it’s the only thing that could make waking up at 6 AM on the weekend sound like fun. I started running as part of a team. I trained with a team for all my full marathons. I still consider my team more of a running family.
Now I have the opportunity to help build an endurance program at my gym to encourage and develop anyone who is interested to run their first or fifth 5k or marathon or triathlon or whatever. I’m thrilled and maybe a bit overwhelmed at the same time.
The first order of business is actually going to be forming a simple weekend running club. Talk about mixing business with pleasure! This won’t start until February 24th, but I can’t wait. I hope to share more about this, but for now I’m focusing on making sure there’s something to talk about to begin with.
Questions for all:
1) If you run/train with a team, what are the most important things to you about that team? What do you value about that team the most?
2) Do you have a coaching certification like RRCA or USATF, or CrossFit Endurance, or another form of coaching training? I’d love to hear about the process of those certifications or the value of it to you as a coach.
